Show Trial: Hollywood, HUAC, and the Birth of the Blacklist

Professor Doherty's upcoming book, "Show Trial: Hollywood, HUAC, and the Birth of the Blacklist," tells the story of the first full-on media-political spectacle of the postwar era, a courtroom drama starring glamorous actors, colorful moguls, on-the-make congressmen, high-priced lawyers, singled-minded investigators and recalcitrant screenwriters, all recorded under the hot lights of the newsreel cameras and broadcast over radio. This rich cultural history is the first book to focus exclusively on the event that ignited the anti-Communist strain in Cold War culture, the Hollywood Ten hearings of 1947, providing background, context and analysis to a proceeding that bridged the realms of entertainment and politics -- part show, part trial. "Show Trial" is set to be published in Spring 2018.

Thomas Doherty is a professor of American studies at Brandeis.
